Why Friendship Matters as Much as Participation

Think about the people, places, and communities that have shaped your life.

NDIS Women's Community Hub North Brisbane

Chances are, what made them memorable wasn’t the activity itself. It was the relationships, support, shared experiences, and sense of connection that came with them. Some of life’s most meaningful moments are linked to friendships and the feeling of being accepted, valued, and included.

For many NDIS participants, building these types of meaningful relationships can be just as important as developing life skills, increasing independence, or achieving personal goals. This is why friendship and connection often have a greater impact on quality of life than participation alone.

At All Abilities Support & Wellbeing, we believe meaningful community participation should create opportunities for confidence, connection, and belonging—not simply attendance.

Why Participation Doesn’t Always Create Connection

Community participation is an important part of many NDIS plans. It creates opportunities to learn new skills, explore interests, build confidence, and engage with the wider community.

However, simply attending an activity does not automatically create friendships. Most people have experienced this themselves. You can attend a workplace, join a sporting club, participate in a class, or regularly visit the same places without ever developing meaningful relationships.

The same can be true for NDIS participants. Someone may attend a group activity every week but still feel disconnected. They may participate in community programs without feeling like they truly belong. This is why meaningful community participation should be measured by more than attendance.

The real question is:

Is this helping someone build meaningful relationships and a stronger sense of belonging?

Why Friendship Matters

Friendships provide something that support services alone cannot. They create a sense of belonging. Friends share experiences, offer encouragement, celebrate achievements, and provide opportunities for genuine social connection.

For many people, friendships contribute significantly to confidence, wellbeing, resilience, and overall quality of life. Meaningful relationships can also reduce feelings of social isolation and help people feel more connected to their community.

This is particularly important because loneliness can affect anyone, regardless of age, ability, or circumstances.

Support workers play an important role in helping participants break down barriers in accessing opportunities and engage with their community, as the strongest sense of belonging often comes from genuine social connections and meaningful relationships.

Confidence Often Starts With Connection

Many people assume confidence comes first. In reality, confidence often develops through positive experiences and supportive relationships.

When people feel accepted and included, they are often more willing to try new things, engage in activities, meet new people, and step outside their comfort zone.

A participant who develops friendships through a community activity may feel more confident attending future events. Someone who feels welcomed within a group may become more comfortable expressing their opinions, sharing their interests, and participating more actively.

Over time, these experiences create a positive cycle.

Connection builds confidence ➜ Confidence encourages participation ➜ Participation creates new opportunities for growth, independence, and belonging.

Meaningful Relationships Rarely Happen Overnight

Friendships are rarely created through a single activity or event. They usually develop through repeated interactions, shared interests, and opportunities to spend time together. This is why consistency is so important.

Attending an activity once may be enjoyable. Attending regularly creates familiarity. Over time, familiarity creates conversations, shared experiences, trust, and connection.

This is one of the reasons meaningful community participation works best when activities align with a person’s interests, goals, and personality.

When people genuinely enjoy what they are doing, relationships tend to develop more naturally.

Creating Opportunities for Connection

The most valuable community participation experiences are often those that create opportunities for genuine interaction.

This might include:

  • Interest-based groups
  • Community events
  • Volunteering opportunities
  • Skill-building activities
  • Social programs
  • Women’s groups and community networks
  • Recreational activities

The activity itself is important, but often it is the relationships formed through the activity that create the greatest long-term impact. Meaningful community participation is not simply about giving people something to do.

This is one of the reasons community-based environments can be so valuable. At the All Abilities Women’s Community Hub in Kedron, women come together to participate in activities, learn new skills, share experiences, and build genuine connections with others. While participants initially attend for a specific activity or program, the keep coming back for friendships, support networks, and sense of belonging they develop.
